Next Up...Twelfth Night!

The Stone Church Players (aka SCP) is pleased to present Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, the fourth installment of the popular ‘Shakespeare in the Sheds’ series and the first comedy since 2022’s Much Ado About Nothing.  The show opens Friday September 6th and will run for two weekends with performances at 7:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 pm on Sundays. Under the direction of Artistic Director Michael F. McClellan, returning to a main stage production for the first time since last year’s Macbeth, the production team includes Aaron Jackson as producer, Leslie Patient as Co-Director, John Leslie as Stage Manager, and Darren DeAngelo as Set and Lighting Designer. Continuing the tradition of presenting Shakespeare outdoors, Mr. McClellan is staging the play on the grounds of the All Saints’ Memorial Church campus and reimagining the action against a backdrop of a 1920’s beach resort.

Talia Strauss leads the cast as Viola, a young woman who is shipwrecked along with her twin brother Sebastien on the shores of Illyria, ruled by the Duke Orsino. She is compassionate and kind and finds herself living a double life as a male servant of the Duke.  Ms. Strauss was last seen in February’s highly acclaimed reading of Dog Sees God and made her SCP debut last September as Mary Warren in The Crucible.  John Davis plays the Duke Orsino, ruler of Illyria and hopelessly in love with the wealthy and beautiful Olivia, played by Grace Ahlin. Both are making their SCP debuts after having appeared together as Peter and Ted in Peter and the Starcatcher at Holmdel Theatre Company this past April.

John Paul Durazzo returns to the SCP stage for his sixth production, playing Malvolio, the pompous steward of Olivia’s household. Mr. Durazzo was last seen as Georg Nowack in SCP’s June production of She Loves Me and audiences may remember him for his turn as Reverend Hale in The Crucible. Playing opposite Mr. Durazzo is another “Crucible” alum, Jacob Turchi, as Sir Toby Belch, Olivia’s uncle, who finds great pleasure in tormenting Malvolio. Mr. Turchi is back for his third production with SCP having last appeared as CB in Dog Sees God.

Rounding out the cast are Emily Lipman as Sebastien, Masha Maister as Feste the Fool, Andrew Struse as Sir Andrew, Theodore Vaysberg as Antonio/Captain, Arielle Halpern as Maria, Chris Stypa as Fabian, and Allison Dassler as Valentine.

Show synopsis (from Shakespeare Birthplace Trust): Viola and her twin brother Sebastian have been shipwrecked; each believes the other to be drowned. Viola disguises herself as a young man and, under the name of Cesario, gets a job as a servant for the Duke, Orsino.

We look forward to seeing you in the new year (and season) starting in February, with our semi-staged reading of “Crimes of the Heart” by Beth Henley, directed by Liz Carlin.

Coming Next Weekend...Miracle on 34th Street!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Kick off your holiday season with SCP’s annual radio play. This year we are thrilled to return to “Miracle on 34th Street”, last performed at the All Saints’ Memorial Church back in 2015. Performances will be held Saturday, December 3rd at 8 pm and Sunday December 4th at 2 pm. Christine Jay voices Doris Walker, a director at Macy’s who initially discovers Kris. Ms. Jay is a veteran of the SCP stage and has appeared in and directed many productions including last season’s “Little Women, The Musical”. Clover and mom Christine have shared the stage several times most notably in this year’s “Anyone Can Whistle” with NENAproductions and the 2016 SCP production of “Once Upon a Mattress”. Aaron “Juice” Jackson rounds out the principal cast as the Walkers’ neighbor, Fred Gailey, a lawyer who befriends Kris. Mr. Jackson has appeared in over 10 SCP productions, most recently as Claudius in “Hamlet”.

The show features a very talented ensemble cast voicing multiple parts. SCP veterans Cynthia Dannen of Rumson and Andrew Struse of Middletown are joined by relative newcomers Darren DeAngelo of Keansburg, Jesse R. Luciani of Red Bank, Leslie B. Patient of Middletown, and Lizzy Stefanic of Matawan.

Show synopsis (from Out of the Box Theatre): Come enjoy the timeless story of an old man who calls himself Kris Kringle and is hired as the Macy's department store Santa. His claim to be the real Santa Claus becomes a court case and a young child's belief could make all the difference.

Running time: 1 hour, 10 minutes. General admission tickets are priced at $10. Tickets can be purchased at the door (cash only). Doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime. Parking is available in the main church parking lot with overflow parking available on Oakdale Run. Masks are recommended but not required. First Look at Rehearsals for Bridges of Madison County!

Good Saturday to you all!

We had our first read for ‘Bridges’ last Monday, and it was an absolute gift to watch our 10 talented cast members bring to life their characters for the first time! It was an inspiring table to be gathered around watching everyone laugh and relax as they realized that we are a big team creating this story together. Every single person in that room left with a smile on their face and new friendships made. We asked the cast a few questions after the read, so scroll down to see their answers! Be sure to stay tuned here and on our social media for fun clips, chats with the cast, and more!

Felicia Russell (Marian): Thoughts on the first read?

The first read was whimsical. It was wonderful being able to come together as a group for the first time and hear just the beginning of what will surely be something amazing.

Alex Dubinsky (Robert): First time tackling Robert, how was it?

I knew it was going to be a lot, and I was right and more. This is by far the most challenging part I’ve ever played, both in terms of acting and vocals. I’m super excited and I’m so, so ready for this incredible show.

Lindsay Abbot (Francesca): What are you most excited to start with the rehearsal process?

There is so much to be excited about. This is an exceptional cast and team. I’m really looking forward to singing this amazing score. I love all the songs so much it’s hard to pick a favorite. I’m also itching to dive deep into the character of Francesca and I can’t wait to work with Michael and Jesse and learn from them.

Tori Dillon (Carolyn) & Brian Smith (Michael): Michael and Carolyn have such a fun dynamic, what’s something you look forward to staging for this duo?

Tori: The phone calls and - Brian: the teasing. Both: The siblings do fight but then how they support each other in the end. #siblinggrowth

Elliot Maher (ensemble) & Amanda Mason (ensemble): As a two-person ensemble, what character from the first read do you think you’re most excited to develop?

Amanda: I’m most excited to develop Chiara. I can’t wait to work on portraying a character who doesn’t speak, but yet has an intense impact on the choices Francesca makes.

Elliot: Paolo seems like he’ll be fun to play, but also I am also excited to do the radio announcer voice. It will also be fun to just live as an Iowan.

John Paul Durazzo (Bud): Your first experience at an SCP read thru and jumping back into theatre after a few years hiatus, what was your first thought at the conclusion of it?

John: Definitely a great feeling overall, such a talented cast of people in this show! I was a bit intimidated at first, and chose not to sing any of my songs right away.

For the longest time, I had always done some kind of theatre in my life, and with not having it in my life for 9 years you feel as though something is missing. It felt so good to be able to get into it once again, as if I was meant to do it.

Over the course of the last 9 years, I tried choruses and such, but I never found them to be truly fulfilling for me. There’s nothing like a good show and a good character to play that helps bring that old spirit out of you. It’s a great feeling!

Patrick Comey (Charlie) & Lauren Friedman (Marge): Marge and Charlie are often considered the comedic relief in this show and you absolutely had us all laughing on Monday. What was your favorite moment with each other from the read?

Lauren: I just love the scene where I ask Charlie if he would throw me out if I cheated on him.

Patrick: I agree with Lauren. Charlie tries to avoid the topic and then lays out a perfect plan. He seems at a loss and defenseless for once and then reaffirms his love for Marge and, as always, turns to cake/pie. That or Lauren’s song.
